Pat Piper has made a career learning something new. As a journalist in the news business, “something new” occurs every hour so he’s becoming an expert at understanding stuff he never thought about. Learning became a common word in “Future Talk: Conversations About Tomorrow” (Warner Books), the popular book he ghostwrote with Larry King as […]

    TV War

Let’s consider the words and tweets (usually two different things) from our President about Iran:
It began with a tweet saying the US military was “locked and loaded”
And then he called off the “locked and loaded” because he decided 150 Iranians could be killed as a result of Iran shooting down a unmanned drone. (Good decision Mr. President).
Then it moved to his telling Meet the Press:
“It’ll be obliteration like you’ve never seen before.”
    This public “In-Your-Face” is :
    (1) Trying to act like a reality TV show script
    (2) Forcing a confrontation as is seen every day on any TV drama (and I include Reality in that category)
    (3) Asking for someone in power to misread this insane-ego-driven-Look-How-Tough-I Am social media bloviating and respond.
I hope our President will get bitch-slapped (as they do on TV) and suddenly understands The Real World has nothing to do with a TV script.

Houston (and everyone else) –We Have A Problem

For those “inside the beltway,” there is a solid memory of October, 2017 when President Trump tweeted his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was “wasting his time” in talks with North Korea and “little rocket man.” This, as Tillerson was in Beijing having face-to-face conversations with the North Korean delegation. Within months, Tillerson decided he had better ways to spend his time. And to his credit, Trump later met with “little rocket man.”

For those still inside the beltway, as well as most of us beyond, there’s a new episode of “Trump Says.”

He tweeted on June 7 the U.S. plan to return to the moon is a waste of time and money. This, after tweeting on May 13 about the U.S. going back to the moon. This, after his vice president announced plans to do it before the end of 2024. The President also suggested we should be doing bigger things “including Mars (of which the Moon is a part).”

As is said in Great Britain, from where our president has just returned, “we find this curious.”

As is said inside the beltway, something isn’t working. And,as is said outside the beltway, this guy should have just stayed with  real estate. . .Mars not included.

    TV (or not) TV?

We had a deadline and we had fear and we had setbacks.

And then late Friday night, we had a presidential tweet announcing the Mexican tariffs set to begin on Monday are “indefinitely suspended.”

Reality TV has become The Real World.

Some can cite cynicism and that’s a valid criticism.

I keep thinking of the Batman TV show during the ’60’s where every episode concludes with “tune in tomorrow–same bat time-same bat channel.”

The President has a point through all of this. Still, it’s becoming more drama than diplomatic negotiation. And drama can suddenly go off script.
